Top Industries Giving to Members of Congress, 2010

From OpenSecrets.Org, here's a list of the top industries contributing to members of the 111th Congress during the 2009-2010 election cycle (see top ten below).

This is very good information. However, I'm afraid that when the Republicans do get back in power, it'll only be a matter of time before the wealthy special interests plague them as well. There's a lot of powerful people who want to maintain the status quo, and I don't think the rent seekers will want to stop the gravy train - particularly with the Supreme Court's recent campaign finance ruling.

I once read a story about someone's train ride to DC. Several dressed up types were talking about their trip when one asked the other why he was going to Washington. "To get money," he said. Another seated nearby said, "That's the only reason anybody goes to Washington anymore."

If these numbers really bother you, think of this: if we de-regulated these industries, these numbers would come way down. If we removed the government protection of unions and allowed them to be covered by anti-trust laws, the numbers would come way down. And if we lifted the cap on individual donations, these numbers would come way down.
