Interesting Facts of the Day: Text Messages

1. Some 83% of American adults own cell phones and three-quarters of them (73%) send and receive text messages.

2. Text messaging users send or receive an average of 41.5 messages on a typical day, with the median user sending or receiving 10 texts daily.

3. Cell phone owners make or receive an average of 12 calls on their cells per day.

4. Young adults are the most avid texters by a wide margin. Cell owners between the ages of 18 and 24 exchange an average of 109.5 messages on a normal day.  (MP: Wow, that works out to almost 7 messages per hour over a 16-hour day, or about one every 9 minutes!)

WOW, for the 18 to 24 set, and on average, texting consumes 11% of waking say (assumes 1 minute to read and respond per message). Even at 30 seconds per message, thats 5.5% of the day.

When my son was in middle school, he rang up 19,960 in a month. But we turned off his phone before the end of the month. Lot of group texts.

When did the telephone regress to being a telegraph?

And why?

Because you can send and recieve at will, with out a response from the other end or wading through an answering machine.

Aldom, a full minute per message, or even 30 seconds, is way too high. The average is probably more like 5 seconds per message received and maybe 15 per message sent.
